APPLETON, Wis. – The Beloit College women's lacrosse team displayed a resilient defensive effort and a late-game offensive surge on Monday night, battling through a tough road matchup against Lawrence University. While the Buccaneers ultimately fell 9-3, the contest was highlighted by a standout performance in the fourth quarter and several individual defensive gems.
The Buccaneers (0-7, 0-2 NACC) wasted no time making their presence felt in the first quarter. After the Vikings (1-6, 1-1 NACC) opened the scoring, sophomore Willow Mashkuri (Middlesex, Vt.) found the back of the net unassisted at the 13:05 mark, knotting the game at 1-1 and swinging the momentum back to the Buccaneers.
As the game progressed, Beloit's defense was kept busy by a high-volume Lawrence attack. Goalkeeper Kim Pilon (Birch Run, Mich.) was a wall in the crease, recording eight crucial saves over 60 minutes of action to keep the Buccaneers within striking distance. The defensive unit, led by Julia Fussy (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Janelle Quast (Litchfield, Minn.), was relentless; Fussy caused four turnovers and scooped up six ground balls, while Quast added three caused turnovers of her own.
Despite a scoring drought in the middle periods, Beloit refused to back down, finishing the game on a high note by outscoring Lawrence 2-1 in the final 15 minutes.
With 2:53 remaining in regulation, Fussy capitalized on a free-position opportunity, firing a precise shot past the Vikings' keeper to notch her first goal of the season. The Buccaneers' offensive persistence continued until the final whistle, as Mashkuri struck again with just 1:13 left on the clock. Mashkuri's second goal of the night, an unassisted effort, capped off a productive individual performance for the attacker.
The Buccaneers saw strong contributions across the turf. Mashkuri led the team with 2 goals on 9 shots (7 on goal). Fussy filled the stat sheet with 1 goal, 6 ground balls, 4 caused turnovers, and 1 draw control. Tate Hutchinson (Calgary, Alberta) dominated the center circle, winning 6 of the team's 9 draw controls while adding 3 ground balls.
The Buccaneers return to Strong Stadium on Thursday to host Lake Forest at 5 pm.
