BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College Buccaneers track and field program put on a masterclass performance tonight, fueled by record-setting throws and dominant sprinting. Led by a triple-gold performance from Joshua Martinez Marte (Beloit, Wis.) and a sprinting sweep by Josh Yearby (Hollywood, FL), the Buccaneers secured a second-place team finish on the men's side (183 points) and a third-place finish for the women (141 points).
The story of the field events was undoubtedly Martinez. The junior dominated the throwing circle, claiming first place in three separate events. Martinez took gold in the Shot Put with a toss of 14.78m, the Discus Throw at 47.03m, and the Hammer Throw with a mark of 48.50m. He also added a top-ten finish in the Javelin (26.71m).
On the women's side, Adelaide Schmitt (Aurora, Colo.) was equally impressive. Schmitt captured first place in the Shot Put with a mark of 10.92m. She also earned a silver medal in the Discus (34.28m) and secured third-place finishes in both the Hammer Throw (37.58m) and the Javelin (30.32m).
Other notable Beloit throwers included Ian Phillips (Machesney Park, Ill.), who took third in the Hammer (43.10m) and the Javelin (37.29m), and Haley Carlin (Sarasota, Fla.), who earned second place in the Javelin with a throw of 30.85m.
Beloit's speed was on full display as Yearby proved to be the fastest man at the meet. Yearby swept the short sprints, winning the 100-meter dash in a blistering 11.01 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.44 seconds. He was supported in the 100m by teammate Ayouba Sumoaro (Las Vegas, NV), who took second place with a time of 11.69.
In the hurdles, Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.) delivered a standout performance, winning the 400-meter hurdles by nearly three seconds with a time of 52.74. Otis also showcased his versatility by taking second place in the High Jump(1.80m). For the women, Jaslyn Gama (Beloit, Wis.) took home a silver medal in the 400-meter hurldes (1:12.15) and a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:02.91).
The Buccaneers also found the top of the podium in the distance events. Dylan Malmgren (Loves Park, Ill.) won the 1500-meter run with a commanding time of 4:01.53, while teammate Leo Ramos followed in third at 4:15.18. In the 800-meter run, Anton Witzel (Erfurt, Germany) secured another gold for Beloit, crossing the line in 1:59.19.
The grueling 3000-meter Steeplechase saw Cooper Rathmann (Milwaukee, Wis.) take first place for the men with a time of 10:39.73. Rathmann also contributed in the field, taking third in the Pole Vault (3.20m). On the women's side, Simone de Montigny (Neenah, Wis.) dominated the 5000-meter run, winning the event in 19:23.52.
Beloit's relay teams showed great chemistry, sweeping the 4x400 meter relays. The men's "A" team took first in 3:26.92, while the women's "A" team also claimed gold with a time of 4:19.86. The women's 4x100 meter relay team also secured a victory, clocking in at 52.44.
In the horizontal jumps, Andrew Arhebun (Chicago, Ill.) earned a silver medal in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.30m, while Will Carrion Jr (Florida City, FL) took seventh at 5.81m. For the women, Naomee Casey (Broken Arrow, Okla) cleared 2.80m to finish seventh in the Pole Vault, and Allie Roberts showed her range by taking second in the 200-meter dash (27.91) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.26).
The Buccaneers are back in action at the Augustana Meet of Champions next week. The two day meet will begin on Friday and conclude on Saturday.Â
