BELOIT, WIS. – In a challenging matchup at Strong Stadium, the Beloit College men's lacrosse team displayed significant grit against a formidable opponent, ultimately falling 18-5 to Concordia University Wisconsin this afternoon. Despite the final score, the Buccaneers provided several highlights for the home crowd, fueled by a sharp defensive performance in the cage and flashes of offensive brilliance.
The Buccaneers (5-7, 2-6 NACC) refused to be intimidated by the high-flying Falcons (13-1, 7-1 NACC) in the opening period. After CUW jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Beloit stormed back with two consecutive goals to pull within one.
The first Buccaneer strike came at the 10:10 mark of the first quarter, when John Imbriale (Brooklyn, NY) found the back of the net following a crisp assist from Samuel Van Der Kolk (Grand Haven, Mich.). Less than a minute later, Isaac Guttormson (West Bend, Wis.) capitalized on an unassisted opportunity, firing a shot past the Falcon goalie to make it a 3-2 game. This back-to-back surge energized the Beloit sideline and proved the Buccaneers could compete with the top tier of the conference.
A major story of the game was the heroic effort of Beloit goalkeeper Christian Moore (Dubuque, Iowa). Facing a relentless Falcon offense that unleashed 52 total shots, Moore stood tall in the crease for 45 minutes, racking up an impressive 19 saves . His ability to track the ball under pressure kept the Buccaneers within striking distance through the early phases of the game. Mateo Passalino (Lake Forest, Ill.) relieved Moore in the fourth quarter, adding four additional saves to bring the team total to 23.
Defensively, Moore also led the team in ground balls with seven, followed by Parker Davis (Inver Grove Heights, MN) with four and Cristian Lewis (Seattle, WA) and Sky Solig (Warroad, MN) with three apiece.
While the Falcons pulled away in the second quarter, Beloit continued to fight for scoring opportunities in the second half.
In the third period, Rilan Larmore (Olympia, Wash.) notched Beloit's third goal of the day at the 7:18 mark, assisted once again by the playmaking of Van Der Kolk, who finished the game with two assists. Shortly after, Liam Walker (Elmhurst, Ill.) showcased his individual skill with an unassisted goal at 3:52 in the third.
Beloit capped off their scoring in the fourth quarter when Cole Conway (Nolensville, Tenn.) connected on a goal assisted by Walker. Walker finished the day as one of Beloit's most productive offensive threats with a goal and an assist.
The Buccaneers are back in action on Wednesday night at home against Dubuque. Game time is set for 7 pm.
