GRINNELL, Iowa – In a contest that featured 25 runs and 29 hits, the Beloit College Buccaneers displayed a potent offensive attack but ultimately fell 16-9 to Grinnell College this afternoon at Pioneer Park. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers (16-15, 9-6 MWC) showed incredible resilience and plate discipline, racking up 13 hits and drawing 11 walks against the Pioneers' ( 16-13, 10-2 MWC) pitching staff.
The Buccaneers' offense ignited in the top of the third inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to seize an early 7-0 lead. The rally showcased Beloit's "small ball" execution and aggressive baserunning. Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) started the scoring by reaching on a bunt single and advancing on an error, allowing Drew Hanson (Edgerton, Wis.) to cross the plate. Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Peyton Nisy (Riverview, Fla.). Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.) then crushed an RBI double to right-center, driving home Alport. The pressure continued as Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) laced an RBI single to left, followed by a wild pitch that allowed Parker Krcmar (Waupaca, Wis.) to slide home. Beloit capped the seven-run frame with RBI singles from Hanson and Nisy, seemingly putting the Bucs in total control.
Beloit's lineup was headlined by several standout performances that kept the game competitive until the final out. Wood was a force at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-5 with an RBI double and a run scored. Hanson reached base in all five of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with three walks and scoring three runs. Alport displayed elite plate vision, drawing three walks and adding a hit while scoring twice. He also stepped onto the mound to pitch the final inning for the Buccaneers. Tomsyck recorded a multi-hit game (2-for-5) and an RBI, continuing to be a steady presence in the middle of the order. Krcmar finished 2-for-5, including a late-game RBI single in the 9th inning that drove in Beloit's final run.
While Beloit held the early momentum, Grinnell responded with a heavy power display. The Pioneers hit three home runs—a three-run shot by Wyatt Raymond in the 3rd, a three-run blast by Nikolas Ruden in the 6th, and a another three-run homer by Connor Goodson in the 7th.
Beloit starter Will Lyng (Helena, MT) battled through 5.2 innings, throwing a staggering 152 pitches in a gritty effort to keep the Buccaneers in the game. Lyng left with the game still within reach, but a six-run seventh inning by the Pioneers eventually tipped the scales for good.
The Buccaneers refused to go quietly. In the top of the 7th, Brankey drove in Hanson with an RBI single to keep the pressure on. In their final turn at bat in the 9th, Wood and Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) reached base to set up Krcmar's RBI single to center field, bringing the final tally to 16-9.
The Buccaneers have a quick turnaround before hosting Rockford University tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from the Ballpark at Strong Stadium is set for 3 pm.
