BELOIT, WI – In a contest defined by early momentum and defensive struggles, the Beloit College Buccaneers (16-15, 9-6 MWC) showed flashes of brilliance at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium this afternoon. Despite a multi-hit performance from the heart of the order and an early lead, the Buccaneers ultimately fell to Rockford University, 7-3.
The Buccaneers came out of the gate aggressive, striking first in the bottom of the opening frame. After Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.) reached on a single to left and promptly swiped second base, third baseman Jacopo Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to left field, giving Beloit an immediate 1-0 advantage.
Tamburini remained a focal point for the Beloit offense throughout the day, finishing 2-for-5 with a double. He was joined in the multi-hit column by shortstop Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis), who turned in a stellar 2-for-3 performance, including a sharp double to right-center in the fifth inning.
After Rockford leveled the game, Beloit reclaimed the lead in a productive fourth inning. Tamburini sparked the rally with a lead-off double to left-center. Two batters later, Drew Hanson (Edgerton, Wis.) hammered a single down the right-field line to drive in Tamburini and tie the game at 2-2.
The Bucs didn't stop there. After Chase Yusi (North Aurora, Ill.) entered the game as a pinch runner for Hanson, Hunter Rauhaus (Chicago, Ill.) came through with a massive two-out RBI single to left, scoring Yusi and pushing Beloit ahead 3-2. At that moment, the Buccaneers held all the momentum and looked poised to pull away.
On the mound, Beloit utilized a deep bullpen. While starter Ryan Apel (Mequon, Wis.) took the loss, the Bucs saw scoreless relief appearances from Sutton Bassett (Carlsbad, Calif), Jude Ackeret (Cedar Grove, Wis,), and Madden Pezzorello (Chandler, Ariz.). Alex Klun (Sun Prairie, Wis.) also provided two innings of gritty work, navigating through traffic to keep the game within reach.
However, defensive miscues ultimately proved costly for the Buccaneers. Three errors on the day allowed Rockford to score four unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings, shifting the lead for good.
Beloit refused to go quietly in the final frames. In the bottom of the ninth, Kaden Gustafson (Ross, Calif.) came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit single to right field, but the Rockford pitching staff managed to shut the door before the Bucs could mount a full comeback.
The Buccaneers are on the road on Thursday in Verona to face off against Edgewood University. First pitch from Stampfl Field is set for 5 pm.
