APPLETON, Wis. – Behind a dominant performance from Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and a steady outing on the mound from Will Lyng (Helena, MT), the Beloit College Buccaneers (20-16, 12-6 MWC) secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Lawrence University this afternoon at Whiting Field.
Beloit's offense set the tone early, tallying 11 hits and jumping out to a lead they would never relinquish.
The story of the game was Alport, who finished the day 3-for-5, finishing just a double short of the cycle. Alport wasted no time making his presence felt, crushing a solo home run to left field in the top of the 1st inning to give the Buccaneers an immediate 1-0 lead.
In the 2nd inning, Beloit extended the cushion. Jacopo Tamburini (Bologna, Italy), who was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day, led off with a single. Alport then followed with a towering triple to right-center field, driving in Tamburini. Moments later, Parker Krcmar (Waupaca, Wis.) kept the momentum going with an RBI single to center, scoring Alport and pushing the Beloit lead to 3-0.
The Buccaneers added their final run in the 4th inning. Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) doubled to center field to put himself in scoring position. Tamburini then stepped up and delivered a clutch RBI double to left-center, scoring Tomsyck and making it 4-0.
Throughout the contest, Beloit's lineup showed depth and discipline, with Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.), Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.), and Drew Hanson (Edgerton, Wis.) all contributing hits to the 11-hit total.
On the mound, Will Lyng (Helena, MT) earned his third win of the season (3-1) with a masterful performance. Lyng pitched 6.2 innings, allowing only one run on six hits while striking out two. His only blemish was a solo home run surrendered to Lawrence's Nathan Depew in the 5th inning.
When Lawrence attempted a late-game rally in the 9th, loading the bases with two outs, Beloit called upon Alport to move from center field to the pitcher's mound. Alport remained cool under pressure, inducing a pop-up to shortstop to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
With the victory, the Bucs reach the 20-win mark for the season, marking their fifth-straight season with at least 20 wins.
The Buccaneers wrap up the regular season next weekend against Cornell. The Rams come to town for a doubleheader on Saturday (12 & 2pm) before closing the regular season in Mount Vernon on Sunday (12pm).
