APPLETON, Wis. – The Beloit College Buccaneers track and field team delivered a series of powerhouse performances this evening, securing multiple first-place finishes and podium spots across both track and field events.
Beloit's relay teams set the tone for the day. The Women's 4x400 team, consisting of Allie Roberts, Syniyah Quenga (Urbana, IL), Cole Miller (Salem, Ore.), and Jaslyn Gama (Beloit, Wis.), took gold with an impressive time of 4:06.63. Not to be outdone, the Men's 4x400 squad (Kembre Daniel (Chicago, Ill.), Anton Witzel (Erfurt, Germany), John Deary II (Avondale, LA), and Dylan Malmgren (Loves Park, Ill.)) also claimed first place, clocking in at 3:31.09.
In the Women's 4x100, the Beloit "B" team (Yaa Akosa (Nungua, Ghana), Selin Tufte (Clarkdale, Ariz.), Ellie Ousley (Skokie, Ill.), and Ray Pagliarini (Mission Viejo, Calif.)) secured a second-place finish with a time of 59.77. On the men's side, the 4x100 "B" team took third in 47.16.
Freshman Allie Roberts had a banner day for the Buccaneers. In addition to her relay success, she sprinted to a first-place finish in the Women's 200m with a time of 27.47.
In the middle-distance events, Daniel showed his strength in the Men's 800m, taking the top spot with a time of 1:56.98. The Buccaneers showed incredible depth in this event, with Witzel (1:59.58), Cooper Rathmann (Milwaukee, Wis.) (2:00.72), and Leo Ramos (2:02.79) finishing 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively.
On the women's side, Simone de Montigny (Neenah, Wis.) earned a hard-fought second place in the 800m at 2;27.59, while Miller took second in the Women's 400m with a time of 1:02.75.
The field events were highlighted by Adelaide Schmitt (Aurora, Colo.), who put on a clinic in the throwing circles. Schmitt captured first place in the Women's Discus with a massive toss of 39.85m and followed it up with another victory in the Javelin at 31.64m. She also placed second in the Shot Put (10.66m) and fourth in the Hammer Throw (40.30m).
For the men, Ian Phillips (Machesney Park, Ill.) was a force in the Hammer Throw, taking first place with a distance of 47.41m. Phillips also contributed a third-place finish in the Shot Put (12.73m) and a fifth-place finish in the Discus (35.37m).
The Buccaneers were equally successful in the jumping pits. Deary soared to victory in the Men's Long Jump with a distance of 6.42m, while teammate Andrew Arhebun (Chicago, Ill.) followed closely in second place at 6.27m.
On the women's side, Tigerlilly Powers grabbed third place in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.59m.
Beloit athletes continued to rack up points across various disciplines. In the Men's 100m, Ayouba Sumoaro (Las Vegas, NV) took 3rd place (11.65) while Akosa finished third on the women's side (14.59). Haley Carlin (Sarasota, Fla.) took home podium finishes in the Women's 100m Hurdles (2nd - 20.37) and Women's Pole Vault (3rd - 2.20m). Rathmann tied for 3rd in the Men's Pole Vault, clearing 3.21m.
Across the country, three Buccaneers are facing off with division I competition at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine.Joshua Martinez (Beloit, Wis.) competed today, placing 15th in the Men's Hammer Throw. Martinez tossed 46.41m to beat out competition from Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and others. He is set to compete in Discus and Shot Put tomorrow afternoon. Josh Yearby (Hollywood, FL) and Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.) take to the track tomorrow as well. Yearby will run in the 100 and 200 meter dashes while Otis will face his fiercest competitors of the season in the 400 hurdles.
The Buccaneers will look to carry this momentum into Midwest Conference Championships next weekend. They will head to Mount Vernon, Iowa and Cornell College to compete on the 8th and 9th.
