ELMHURST, Ill. – The Beloit College women's soccer team kicked off their 2026 campaign this evening, showing defensive grit in a hard-fought season opener against Elmhurst University at Langhorst Field. Despite a relentless offensive push from the Bluejays, the Buccaneers remained competitive throughout the 90 minutes, ultimately falling 2-0.
The story of the match for Beloit was the stellar play of sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Dietz (Schaumburg, IL). Facing a barrage of 17 total shots and 12 shots on target, Dietz was the backbone of the Buccaneers' defense. She recorded a massive 10 saves on the night, including seven in a high-pressure first half that kept Beloit within striking distance. Her performance ensured that the Bluejays had to earn every inch of the pitch, as she turned away several point-blank opportunities.
While scoring chances were hard to come by against a disciplined Elmhurst backline, Beloit found their best offensive spark in the 31st minute. Sophomore Calypso Ayoung (Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago) managed to break through the Bluejays' defense to fire a sharp shot on goal. Elmhurst keeper Erin Fitzharris was forced to make the save, marking Beloit's most dangerous scoring threat of the match.
Ayoung remained active throughout her 71 minutes of play, providing the primary offensive pressure for the Buccaneers.
Beloit relied heavily on a core group of starters who logged significant minutes to weather the Elmhurst attack. Along with Dietz playing the full 90 minutes, freshman Sydney Rausch (Boise, ID) also went the distance, providing veteran leadership on the backline.
The Bluejays managed to break the scoreless tie late in the first half. Lauren Nevins found the back of the net at the 35:01 mark following an assist from Calli Edwards. Only three minutes later, Edwards turned from playmaker to scorer, netting a goal in the 39th minute to give Elmhurst a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The Buccaneers adjusted effectively in the second half, tightening their formation and held the Bluejays scoreless for the final 45 minutes of the game.
While the Buccaneers (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MWC) start the season with a loss, the defensive cohesion and the elite play of Dietz provide a strong foundation for the weeks to come. Beloit will look to build on this performance as they continue their non-conference schedule and hunt for their first win of the 2026-27 season. The Buccaneers face Kalamazoo College at home on Thursday afternoon. Kick off from the Strong Complex Soccer Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
