BELOIT, Wis. – Under the afternoon sun at Strong Soccer Field, the Beloit College Buccaneers (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MWC) displayed flashes of brilliance and early offensive pressure this afternoon, though they ultimately fell 4-1 to the Kalamazoo College Hornets (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAA). Despite the final score, the Buccaneers thrilled the home crowd of 76 fans by jumping out to an early lead and maintaining a defensive grit throughout the match.
The Buccaneers wasted no time asserting themselves in the first half. In the 9th minute (08:19), Beloit's offense executed a clinical play to take the initial lead. Following a well-placed ball from Grace Ramel (Chicago, IL), Calypso Ayoung (Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago) capitalized on the opportunity to strike her first goal of the season.
Ramel's vision to find Ayoung in space allowed the Buccaneers to seize a 1-0 advantage, a lead they held for over ten minutes as they disrupted the Hornets' rhythm.
While the Hornets eventually found their offensive stride, several Buccaneers delivered standout individual performances. Ayoung led the scoring for Beloit, finishing the game with a 100% shot-on-goal accuracy and providing the early spark the Buccaneers needed. Ramel provided the game's opening assist and was a key facilitator in the first half, logging 70 minutes of play.
Goal keeper Sophia Dietz (Schaumburg, IL) faced a heavy barrage of 25 shots from the Kalamazoo offense. Dietz remained resilient, recording 7 saves over 74 minutes of action to keep the Buccaneers within striking distance for much of the game. Coming off the bench, Petra Fondrk (Madison, WI) was an offensive threat, leading the team with two shots, one of which forced a save from the Kalamazoo keeper. Mikayla Campbell (Madison, WI) entered the match in the final 15 minutes and was perfect in relief, recording two saves and allowing zero goals to close out the contest.
The match was a physical affair, with Beloit showing a competitive edge. The Buccaneers committed 12 fouls compared to Kalamazoo's 5, reflecting a high-intensity defensive approach. Sophomore Grace Christos (Valporariso, IN) anchored the midfield for 78 minutes, while defenders Zyana Turcios (Elmwood Park, Ill.) and Fianne Makela (Duluth, MN) each logged over 70 minutes to manage the Hornets' frequent attacks.
Kalamazoo managed to equalize in the 22nd minute before pulling away in the second half with goals from Savannah Norman, Kearsten Schultz, and a late penalty kick by Ruby Hogan.
The Buccaneers are back in action on Monday, September 7th on the road at Concorida Chicago. Kick off from Concordia stadium is set for 2:00 p.m.
