A single big inning led to a loss for the Beloit College baseball team Tuesday morning in the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida. The Buccaneers fell to UW-La Crosse 7-2.
The Bucs got on the board first in the top of the third putting together a two-out rally.
AJ Fitzpatrick provided the spark with a single to left field.
James Wicker followed with a bunt single and
Garrison Ferone drove in the first run of the game tagging a double to center.
The Eagles responded in the bottom of the fifth plating six runs on five hits in the frame. They added a single run in the sixth to make it 7-1.
Beloit rallied again with two outs in the top of the eighth capitalizing on a walk, wild pitch and an Eagle miscue to bring another run in but the UW-L defense got out of the inning and held in the ninth for the win.
Wicker led the Buc offense going 2-for-3 in the batter's box.
Matthew Starr suffered his first loss on the mound this season in 4.2 innings of work.
