A huge seventh inning led to a Beloit College baseball win over Monmouth College 14-4 in eight innings Sunday at The Ballpark.
The Buccaneers finally saw the sun come out for the majority of a game at The Ballpark and they treated the largest crowd of the season to great game.
The lead went back-and-forth over the first five innings but the seventh proved to be the most exciting of the contest. The Bucs' offense absolutely exploded in the inning plating eight runs.
Garrison Ferone led off the frame with a single to left field. A hit and run was clearly on as Ferone took off during the wind up and
Matt O'Leary tagged a ball to left center allowing Ferone to advance to third.
Evan Zenger took one for the team to load the bases.
Brett Kiger capitalized with a single to short center that brought in the first two runs of the inning.
Drew Freitag laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position.
James Wicker was tapped for the pinch hit appearance and made good on the opportunity with a sacrifice fly to right field.
AJ Fitzpatrick kept the inning going after two outs with a two-run blast that easily cleared the left field wall to make it 9-4 Beloit.
Matt Crandall was hit by a pitch and stole second before
Miles Souza drew a walk. The pair advanced on a wild pitch before Ferone cleared the bases on his second at bat of the inning with a four-bagger over the fence in right center that widened the gap to 12-4.
The Bucs' offense continued to roll in the bottom of the eighth as Beloit registered three consecutive singles from Kiger, Freitag and
Jake Rudolph to plate the first run. Rudolph moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Following the first out, the Scots opted to intentionally walk Crandall to set up a potential double play or at least a force at any base. Souza had different plans making the Monmouth hurler work and drawing a bases loaded walkoff walk for the 14-4, run-rule, win.
Ferone and O'Leary were dialed in each posting four hits in the game and combining for seven runs and three runs batted in. Zenger was the RBI leader of the game with four on a pair of hits.
Jacob Sligar registered the start and no decision in five innings of work allowing two earned runs while striking out two.
Matthew Starr posted three innings of brilliant relief work allowing a single hit while fanning three for the win on the mound.
