The Beloit College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Grinnell College 13-4 and 9-4 Saturday afternoon in Beloit. The Buccaneers hit the ball well but the Pioneer defense made some phenomenal plays to keep the Beloit offense from rolling.
The opener was a tight game with the lead changing sides four times over the first six innings. Beloit struck first with a
Maddie Moser single to center bringing
Emily Stapay in to score in the bottom of the second.
Grinnell responded with a pair in the top of the third before the Bucs came back with three in the bottom of the fourth. In that inning,
Riley Conn and Sidda Meyers doubled while
Sydney Harbison added a base knock to register RBIs in the frame and give Beloit a 4-2 lead.
The Pioneers narrowed the gap to one with a single score in the top of the fifth before their offense exploded for four runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh for the final.
Stapay led Beloit at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Maddy Pfortmiller suffered the loss on the mound in 6.1 innings of work.
Another big inning for the Pioneers in the nightcap put the game out of reach. Grinnell struck first with a run in the top of the first but the Bucs had a response. Harbison drew a bases loaded RBI walk in the bottom of the second for the equalizer. Then with bases loaded, Meyers hit a skyrocket that the shortstop couldn't handle. With two outs, the Buc runners were going on the hit so two runners came in to score on the error to make it 3-1 Beloit.
A big fifth inning saw seven Pioneers runs added to the scoreboard. Grinnell added another in the sixth to make it 9-3.
Beloit added a tally on another RBI walk with bases loaded, this time drawn by
Isabel Johnson, but that's all the Bucs could push across in the bottom of the sixth.
Conn registered two of the Bucs' four hits in the game.
Cora Aubert suffered the complete game loss in the circle.
