The Beloit softball senior class was honored in between games of the Buccaneers' twinbill against Monmouth College. The Bucs split the doubleheader winning the opener 2-0 and falling in the nightcap 2-1.
On a gorgeous day at the Strong Stadium Complex, the Bucs treated their faithful to an exciting win in the opener. The first three innings were a pitcher's duel with neither team advancing a runner past second base in that span.
Gaining momentum from a three-up, three-down inning on defense, the Beloit bats got going in the fourth.
Emily Stapay notched a one-out double to right field. On the next at bat, a wild pitch on strike three put runners on the corners. Then,
Kaitlynn Taft laid down a sacrifice bunt that had pinch runner
Ella Diers coming in to score for the 1-0 lead.
Getting her first start of the season after suffering an injury,
Angela Donath doubled up the Bucs' score tagging a shot that snuck inside the foul pole in left field for her first collegiate four-bagger.
Beloit's defense sat the Fighting Scots down in order the rest of the way for the win.
Isabel Johnson led Beloit offensively going 2-2 at the plate.
Maddy Pfortmiller pitched a gem scattering five hits across the complete game of work. She fanned eight without issuing a single free base.
Game two was much like the first, a defensive battle. This time, Monmouth had the upperhand plating a run in the top of the first and another in the top of the fifth for a 2-0 lead.
The Bucs threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Donath sparked the offense with a one-out single up the middle but was kept out of scoring position on a fielder's choice in the next at bat. Stapay followed with a single and then
Riley Conn posted another that brought in
Stephannie Lopez to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Fighting Scots got out of the jam with a flyout.
Stapay led Beloit going 2-4 in the batter's box.
Cora Aubert suffered the loss allowing a single earned run while striking out three without a walk in five innings in the circle.
