The Beloit College women's lacrosse team opened the 2022 campaign with an exciting 15-11 win over Augsburg University in front of the Buccaneer faithful at Strong Stadium Saturday evening.
The rain held off on the unseasonably warm evening providing a great atmosphere for the Beloit home opener Saturday and the Bucs' did not disappoint.
Just 37 seconds into the game, Beloit tallied its first goal of 2022 as
Katrina Sanchez found the back of the net for her first collegiate score. Before five minutes of action had passed,
Johanna McNair bested the Auggie keeper two more times to give Beloit a 3-0 lead.
Augsburg came back with a pair of goals before
Olivia Farbarik, who had assisted on the second McNair goal, got into the scoring column to wrap up the goal scoring in the first quarter. Beloit went into the second period with a 4-2 advantage.
The squads were even in the second and third quarters with each team scoring three goals in each of the two periods to take the game into the fourth with the Bucs holding a 10-8 lead.
The Auggies registered the first score of the quarter before Sanchez and
May Willison posted back-to-back scores in just over two minutes of action pushing the lead back to three.
Augsburg's Mackenzie Galazen was a handful for the Bucs' defense throughout the game but even more so in the fourth quarter. She weaved through the Beloit defense for two consecutive goals just 14 seconds apart to cut the Beloit lead to one, 12-11 with 8:55 remaining.
A costly second yellow for an Auggie attacker had Beloit playing with a person advantage for the last five minutes. The Bucs capitalized with goals from McNair, Farbarik and Willison to bring the score to the final, 15-11.
McNair paced Beloit in her first collegiate outing with six points on four goals and a pair of assists. She added a team-high nine ground balls and caused six turnovers. McNair was also active in the resets gaining possession for Beloit on seven of the team's 15 draw controls.
Sanchez and
Chloe Hain each scored on three ocassions while Willison and Farbarik found the back of the net twice.
Paige Airaudi also tallied her first goal of the season in the game.
Sofia Jeddeloh registered the complete game victory in net for the Bucs stopping 14 Augsburg shots in the process including a fantastic saves down the stretch to help seal the game.
