GRINNELL, Iowa - Beloit's men's and women's track & field teams finished fourth and fifth at the Midwest Conference Championships over the weekend. The Buccaneers Men finished with 92 team points, while the women scored 89 points.
The men's performance was highlighted by freshman Nathaniel Otis, who won two separate events, helping him earn the MWC Men's Newcomer of the Year. He won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.73, which was just 0.13 seconds better than teammate
Azeez Ganiyu. Otis also won the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.00, which was 1.45 seconds ahead of the second-place time. Otis also ran a leg on Beloit's second-place 4x400 relay, along with
Alexandre Atou,
Ahmasi Martin, and
Brandon Joly, which finished with a time of 3:21.54, which was just 0.12 seconds shy of the top time. Atou added a third-place finish in the 400 meters (49.83), while
Emiliano Reyes and
Diontia Charles finished third in the shot put (44-06.00) and javelin (148-05), respectively.
On the women's side,
T'Aira Boyance continued her outstanding senior season, winning all four events she competed in, helping her earn MWC Women's Outstanding Track Performer of the Year. Boyance won both the 200 and 400 meters with times of 25.01 and 57.86, respectively, while also running a leg on both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, which both finished in first place. In the 4x100, she teamed up with
Jordyn McDonald,
Alayna Furch, and
Hannah Welte to run a time of 48.22, which breaks that team's own school record by 0.07 seconds. In the 4x400, Boyance, McDonald, and Furch were joined by
Candis Damste to run a time of 3:57.28. McDonald added a second-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 12.49, which was 0.09 seconds shy of the winning time, and a third-place finish in the 200 meters. Furch placed third in the 400 meters (59.74), while Welte won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.87, which was more than a second better than the next-fastest time.
Elizabeth Kalk also had a top-three finish, tying for second in the high jump with a mark of 5-01.75.
