Late Flurry Leads Bucs in Season Opener

The Beloit College men's lacrosse team tallied two goals in the final 39 seconds to register a comeback win 10-9 over Augustana College in the 2018 opener Wednesday evening.

A flurry of scoring in the fourth quarter led to an exciting finish to Beloit's season opener. Nine goals were scored in the final period, six by the Buccaneers including two in the final minute to register the win.

Augustana struck first in the game with a goal by Nick Gallo less than two minutes into the contest but the Buccaneers scored twice before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead after the first 15 minutes. Tobin Greenwald got the goal scoring started for Beloit at 9:33 in the first followed by Mike Spencer with just nine seconds left on the clock.

The Vikings responded with three goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the break.

Mark Gannon pulled the Bucs within one at the 11:22 mark of the third quarter. Augustana countered with two goals to extend the deficit to 6-3. Matt Lee notched his first goal of 2018 off an assist from Nick Meisberger with 1:45 showing on the clock.

The Vikings struck first in the final period of play with a goal at 12:54. Lee found the back of the net for the second time in the game at the 11:48 mark with an unassisted goal. A brief lull in scoring was broken by Augustana's Jack Preston at 6:58 to give the Vikings a three-goal lead. Beloit's Kevin Joswiak quickly narrowed the gap to two, 8-6, off an assist from Lee just 1:07 later.

Augustana came back with a man-up goal at 5:34 to make it 9-6 but Beloit refused to let up. Just 30 seconds later, Lee found the back of the net for his third goal of the game to make it 9-7. Joswiak came through with his second goal of the game, this time off of an assist from Spencer with 2:56 remaining. In the final 40 seconds, Ezra Rogers would knot the score on an unassisted goal and Michael Boyland tallied his first goal of the season off an assist from Gannon to give Beloit the win in the season opener.

Lee led the Bucs with four points from three goals and an assist. In net, John Murphy picked up the win tallying six saves in the contest.

Next Up: The Bucs head to Texas to face Hendrix College March 9 in Dallas followed by a game against Southwestern University March 11 in Georgetown.
