Women's Hockey Opens 2026 With Decisive 6-2 Win over Spartans

Box Score

DUBUQUE, IA – In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive resilience, the Beloit College Women's Hockey team traveled to the ImOn Arena this afternoon, to deliver a statement victory against the University of Dubuque. Led by multi-goal performances from Kylie Schryer (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) and Julia Fussy (Mahtomedi, Minn.), the Buccaneers (2-10-0, 0-4-0 WIAC) controlled the pace from the opening puck drop to the final whistle, walking away with a convincing 6-2 win.

The Buccaneers wasted no time establishing dominance, and the game's first major momentum shift came via a special teams masterpiece. Just over six minutes into the first period, while skating a man down, Schryer found the back of the net for a short-handed goal (06:26).

Scoring shorthanded provided an immediate surge of confidence for the Bucs that stifled the Spartans' (2-11-0, 1-7-0 NCHA) early power play. This momentum carried into the second period, where Schryer struck again at the 09:03 mark, assisted by Makenzee Kostiuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario), to extend the lead to 2-0.

Beloit's ability to respond to adversity was the story of the third period. After Kostiuk pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the second, Dubuque finally showed signs of life when Malia Tetreault scored at 07:10 in the third to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Julia Fussy ensured that Dubuque's hope was short-lived. Just 51 seconds after the Spartans scored, Fussy capitalized on a power play (08:01) to restore the three-goal cushion. This rapid response effectively broke the Spartans' spirit and regained total control for the Buccaneers. Fussy netted her second of the night to push the lead to 5-1at the 16:47 mark. Evie Daly closed out the scoring for the Bucs at 17:57 of the third period.

One of the ultimate playmakers of the day, Claire Dixon (Edwards, Colo.) provided the "vision" for the offense with two crucial assists. While the offense grabbed the headlines, Janelle Quast (Litchfield, Minn.) was a wall in the crease. She turned away 31 of 33 shots, maintaining a .939 save percentage and frustrating Dubuque's shooters throughout the contest.

Beloit's victory was a clinic in making shots count. Despite being outshot 33-29 by the Spartans, the Buccaneers were far more clinical, converting over 20% of their attempts into goals. Their special teams also proved to be the difference-maker, finishing 1-for-2 on the power play and adding that vital short-handed goal in the first.

The Bucs have a quick turnaround before hosting the Raiders of MSOE tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop from the Woodman's Center in Janesville is set for 3 pm.
