Hall of Honor
Dynamic. If there was one word to describe Aaron Whetstone’s style of play, dynamic would be the clear choice. Whetstone arrived at Beloit College in the fall of 2001. By the time he graduated in 2005, Whetstone was regarded as one of the greatest men’s soccer players in program history.
His kind nature off the field transformed into a dominate force when Whetstone set foot on the pitch. “Aaron was one of the most dynamic and natural goal scorers this program has ever had,” said former coach Tim Schmiechen. “His creativity, speed, and skill allowed him to make many of his goals look easy. Though Aaron dominated the field and our conference, off the field he was a soft-spoken, extremely kind teammate who’s love for the game was infectious to all of his teammates and coaches.”
Each of his four seasons as a staple on the Buccaneer men’s soccer team, Whetstone ranked in the top ten in the league in points. He led the Midwest Conference in shots as a sophomore in 2002 and in assists as a senior in 2004. Each of those seasons, Whetstone led the Buccaneers to the MWC Tournament Championship match.
Whetstone led the Bucs to 40 wins, including 22 in league play and three MWC tournament berths in four seasons. The three-time All-MWC selection also garnered all-region recognition in 2003 and 2004. The Buccaneers’ 2003 Gold Boot honoree, Whetstone’s name still appears atop the list in program history for assists in a season and career assists, both top six marks in the conference record book.
He was the recipient of the Donald ‘Red’ Janssen Award in 2004 and was named the Pat Dawson Award winner in 2005 as Beloit College’s top male junior and senior student-athlete respectively.
