Hall of Honor
The single-season softball record of 37 runs scored by Anna Hughes McCarthy in 1990 as a first-year Beloit College student-athlete still stands today. This is not a surprise considering that in the fall of 1989, McCarthy led the Buccaneer women’s soccer team in goals with seven, in assists with six, and was well on her way to creating a sports legacy at Beloit College. Hailing from Roseville, Minn., McCarthy was a key player on her varsity high school soccer team, and led her team to the state championship her senior year. While at Roseville Area High School she was also a member of the varsity softball and hockey teams and a member of the National Honor Society. Her experiences as an athlete and scholar in high school prepared her for the rigors of being a student-athlete at Beloit College. The versatile and tenacious playing style displayed by McCarthy in both soccer and softball, along with her positive attitude and hard work, earned her the respect of her teammates and many academic and athletic awards. By her senior year she had received four letters in both soccer and softball, was a four-time all-conference selection, earned the title of NCAA Division III runs-per-game leader and was named Beloit College’s top senior student-athlete. As a capstone to an already stellar career, McCarthy was the recipient of the Janssen Award, the Peterson Award and the Beloit College Blanket. McCarthy resides in Beloit with her husband, Dennis McCarthy, who is a member of the Class of 1993, and their three children, Katherine, Meghan and Sean.
