An outstanding prep athlete at Beloit Memorial high School, Donald W. Smith was originally recruited by Bear Bryant to play for the University of Kentucky where he was a starter on the undefeated freshman team.  In the fall of 1950, he transferred to Beloit to the reunited with high school coach Carl Nelson, a member of the Beloit College Class of 1925.  He played offensive and defensive tackle in the 1951 and 1952 teams.  The team lost only one game in 1951 and Smith helped lead the 1952 squad to Beloit’s first ever undefeated season – that team only allowed a school-record 18 points.  As a wrestler his senior year he competed briefly but very successfully at heavyweight.  He threw shot on the track team with consistent results over 42 feet.  In his senior year he was first in the Great Lakes Collegiate Invitational and finished third in the Beloit Relays. Following military service in the Counter Intelligence Corps, he entered law school and has served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Wisconsin since 1970.
