Hall of Honor
An outstanding athlete from Chicago’s Westinghouse Area High School, Alonzo Jackson came to Beloit to play for Coach Bill Knapton and became an invaluable part of a great tradition. “A.J.” played in every game during his four years and totaled 804 points and 332 rebounds. Coach Knapton has said that Jackson was “probably the best athlete I’ve coached in any sport.” Co-captain as a junior and a senior, he was recipient of the Dawson Award given to a senior for outstanding athletic ability, scholarship and leadership. Named MVP in 1980 when the team went 19-5, then the best record in Knapton’s years as coach, he was a second-team selection in the NCAA Division III Midwest District and all Midwest Conference. The team compiled a 69-26 overall record during the years Jackson played. He was the top percentage shooter (54.7) as a senior, when the Bucs were second in the Midwest Conference and received an NCAA tournament at-large bid and won consolation honors. Known for his lightning quickness, tenacious defense and outstanding ball handling, he earned the respect and admiration of his teammates, his coach, his opponents and his fans. Since graduation Jackson has served on the Chicago police force where he is a detective.
