“Zac is focused on success and that separates him from most athletes,” said head coach Brian Bliese back in 2001. Freudenburg started running as a freshman in high school. And he still hasn’t stopped. A Midwest Conference Champion in Cross Country and a two-time national qualifier, he also still holds five Track & Field distance records and was a national qualifier in the steeplechase. In 1998, he won the 1000, 1500 and 5000 at the MWC Indoor Championships and then captured the 1500 and 3000 Steeplechase at the Outdoor Championships. After graduation he continued running, finishing third in the Pikes Peak Marathon in 2006 and 19th in the Boston Marathon in 2007 while qualifying and running in the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. He then turned his focus to mountain running and competed on the U.S. Team at the World Mountain Running Championships in 2008 and 2009. Also in 2009 he set a new course record in the St. Louis Marathon and also set a world record for running a marathon while pushing a stroller with his oldest son, Liam. A four-time Academic All-American, Freudenburg is currently working as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Utrecht in the field of Brain Computer Interfacing.
