Although he never played football at Columbus High School, Francis “Dutch” Fagan quickly made his mark on the Beloit College gridiron. A standout on the defensives line his freshman year, he starred at end as a sophomore and as tackle his last two years. During his senior year, Dutch was named honorable mention all-conference as the champion Gold recorded four shutouts. A four-year, three-sport athlete, Dutch was also leading rebounder in basketball, a standout in discus, shot and javelin for the track team, and was voted “outstanding senior athlete.” After entering the United States Marine Corps, he continued to show is athletic prowess when he won second place in discus throwing during the Allied Serviced Athletic Championships held in Auckland, New Zealand. In 1941, Dutch married Betty Buell of the Class of 1942. A highly decorated Marine captain, he gave his life at Iwo Jima on February 27, 1945.
