When Mark Sobczak arrived at Beloit College from Kettle Moraine High School, he was no stranger to physical adversity, having already experienced a knee injury, a broken arm, and a dislocated elbow.  Proving he was ready to be a team player and make a positive impact, Sobczak spent his freshman year working hard and regaining strength so that by his sophomore year he was a standout on the basketball court. A four-year letter-winner in basketball, Sobczak was blessed with size, stamina, and soft hands -- all attributes he exploited while a Buccaneer.  As a sophomore, Sobczak saw playing time against the University of Chicago, and it was during that game he was able to show Coach Bill Knapton what he was capable of on the court.  By his senior year, he was a two-time first-team All-Midwest Conference selection, and as a senior, an NCAA Division III first-team all-region choice. That same year, he earned the inaugural Midwest Conference North Division “Player of the Year Award.” With each season, Sobczak displayed more finesse on the court, and continued piling up the points as well as the honors. His point total during his senior year was 469, and it was during that season in a game against Ripon that Sobczak scored his 1,000th career point.  At the end of his tenure as a Buccaneer, he had 1,169 career points, which currently places him seventh on the all-time Beloit College list. To round out an already spectacular career, Sobczak was the recipient of the Janssen Award, was awarded the Beloit College Blanket, and was voted the “Most Valuable Player” for the 1991-92 season.  Mark currently lives in Delafield, Wis., with his wife, Heather, and their two daughters.
